Most surfboard brands don't tell you what their boards weigh. You'll get length, width, thickness and litres, but rarely a number on the scale. Yet weight is one of the things you feel most: carrying it down the beach, paddling it out, and how it turns once you're up.
So we went looking. We pulled every real board weight we could find for the boards Aussies ride most: gliders, noseriders, performance longboards, mid-lengths, mini mals and fish. We've included our boards too.
The short version: traditional PU is usually the heaviest construction, and a PU log or glider often weighs 8–11 kg. Modern EPS / epoxy boards can be several kilos lighter at the same size. Only premium carbon and epoxy builds match or beat Summer vibes weights, and they usually cost much more and often carry less foam. Here's how it breaks down.
Glider weights (10'6–11'0)
Gliders are where weight matters most. You're carrying 10–11 feet of board, often a fair way, for a session on small clean days. Across 28 weighed 10'+ PU gliders and speed shapes, the typical board weighed around 9.5 kg, and the 11'0s from Christenson, Gato Heroi and Nick Melanson weighed 10–11.3 kg.

How to read the comparison
Rows run from lightest to heaviest; weight ranges are ordered by their midpoint. The short view includes Summer vibes and the lightest alternatives. Compare length, volume, shape and construction together when choosing a board to carry and handle. PU logs are intentionally built for trim; carbon and engineered epoxy builds may be lighter at different volumes.
Source types: Summer vibes figures come from its current product catalogue. Published weight charts and individual-board reports are different evidence. A † identifies an individual-board report; it is not a guaranteed weight for every board with that model name. ~ before a weight marks an estimate from similar-sized boards and construction, not a measured weight or a manufacturer specification. ~ before a price marks an approximate guide price. Rounded current prices and earlier figures awaiting a fresh exact-model price check are identified in the category notes. A dash means the value could not be confirmed.
Current linked prices are Australian brand retail or retailer listed prices, not a blanket claim of manufacturer RRP. Sale, sold-out and custom-order prices are explained in the category notes. Shipping, fins, finish and different-year construction can change the comparison.
Original weight research sources: USEDSURF, Seakong, BREAKOUT, Surftech/NSP. Current price sources are linked beside each researched model above.
The McTavish Sugar and the North Coast Takayama Prince Kuhio are beautiful boards, but neither has a published weight. As thick PU gliders with wooden stringers, you'd expect them to sit right up there with the other premium PU gliders. For reference, the lightest 10'0 epoxy longboards we found (like the Thunderbolt Kai Sallas Waikiki) weigh around 7 kg, about the same as the Summer vibes Glider, but they're a foot shorter.
Bottom line: premium PU gliders from McTavish, Takayama, Thomas and Christenson cost roughly $2,500–$4,000 and weigh around 10–11 kg. The Summer vibes Glider is around $1,300 and 7.1 kg, the lightest 10'-plus glider on the market that we know of. No need to spend $4k, or lug 11 kg down the beach, for those small, clean glider days.
Noserider and classic log weights (9'1–9'6)
A traditional PU noserider is meant to have some heft, as it helps the board trim and hold on the nose. Across more than 200 weighed 9'0–9'8 PU logs from Bing, Christenson, Takayama, Thomas and Gato Heroi, typical PUs weigh 8–9 kg, while EPS logs from Thunderbolt, NSP and co. come in at roughly 6–7 kg. Summer vibes came in under or level with all of them, at 6.3 kg for the 9'4, with more foam.

Bottom line: premium PU logs from McTavish, Thomas, Christenson, Takayama and Bing cost roughly $2,200–$3,300 and weigh around 8–9 kg, and a Keyo is around $1,950. The Summer vibes Classic 9'4 is around $930 and about 2 kg lighter, with Thunderbolt-quality light weight but more volume. No need to spend $2,500-plus, or carry the extra weight all the way to the point, to walk the board on those clean summer days.
Performance longboard weights (9'0–9'3)
Performance logs are built to turn, so lighter is better. This is where carbon and Thunderbolt builds shine: the lightest we found weigh 4–5 kg, but they're also thinner and lower in volume, coming in at around 60–65L.

Firewire calls its Helium construction its lightest ever, but publishes foam density rather than finished board weights.
Bottom line: premium performance logs from Firewire, Thunderbolt and McTavish cost roughly $1,400–$2,500. The Summer vibes Performance 9'1 is around $900 at around 5.8 kg, so it has more foam than most at roughly half the price. No need to spend double for a light, lively thruster performance longboard.
Mid-length and egg weights (6'8–7'6)
Mid-lengths and eggs are the do-everything boards, and the Channel Islands CI Mid is the benchmark. In PU, most 7'0 mids from Channel Islands, Christenson, Mandala, Thomas and Haydenshapes weigh around 5 kg. Premium epoxy builds from Thunderbolt and Haydenshapes FutureFlex get that down to around 3–4 kg, at $1,200–$2,000.

No need to spend double for an easy-riding, wave-catching mid that goes great.
Mini mal weights (7'0–8'0)
Mini mals are the classic first surfboard after a softboard, so weight really matters: they get carried, dropped and paddled by progressing surfers. Most 7'0–8'0 boards we found weigh 4.2–5.7 kg, and traditional PU 8'0s reach 5.8–6.9 kg.

Bottom line: mini mals from Thunderbolt, Haydenshapes and McTavish cost roughly $1,400–$2,200, and even budget PU options run around $900–$1,000. The Summer vibes Mini Mal 8'0 is around $800–$860 and as light as or lighter than every board we found at its size: 4.7 kg. No need to carry a 6 kg board, or spend $1,500-plus, to progress and cruise.
Fish weights (6'0–6'6)
Fish are short and wide, so the weights are small: most PU fish from 6'0 to 6'6 weigh 3.5–4.8 kg, and premium epoxy builds from Firewire, JS and Haydenshapes get down to 2.5–2.9 kg. The bigger difference here is price: most name-brand fish cost $1,100–$1,400.

Bottom line: name-brand fish from JS, DHD, Lost, Pyzel, Firewire, Channel Islands and Haydenshapes cost roughly $1,100–$1,400. The Summer vibes Fish 6'0 is around $700 at around 3.2 kg, lighter than most PU fish and with more foam than most, so there's no need to spend $1,100-plus for a fast, fun fish.
Why some boards are lighter: PU vs epoxy vs carbon
The biggest factor is construction, not brand.
- PU (polyurethane): the traditional foam, glassed with polyester resin. Classic feel and flex, but the heaviest. Tints, gloss coats, thick stringers and glass-on fins add more.
- EPS / epoxy: expanded polystyrene foam with epoxy resin. Lighter and more buoyant than PU at the same size, and tougher against dings. Most of the lighter boards in these tables are EPS / epoxy, including every Summer vibes board.
- Carbon and premium epoxy (Thunderbolt, Firewire Helium, FutureFlex): carbon or engineered laminates over light EPS. The lightest boards you can buy, usually at the top of the price range.
How Summer vibes boards are built
Since most brands don't publish this either: every Summer vibes surfboard is a 30 kg/m³ EPS core, glassed with fibreglass cloth and epoxy resin. The glass schedule by model:
| Board | Deck | Bottom |
|---|---|---|
| Grom | 2 x 6oz | 6oz + 4oz fin patch |
| Fish, Discus, Mid Twin | 2 x 6oz | 6oz + 4oz + 4oz fin patch |
| Mini Mal | 6oz + 2 x 4oz | 6oz + 4oz + 4oz fin patch |
| Performance, Classic | 2 x 6oz + 4oz | 6oz + 4oz + 4oz fin patch |
| Glider | 2 x 6oz + 4oz + 6oz deck patch | 6oz + 4oz + 4oz fin patch |
Surfboard weight FAQ
How much does a longboard weigh? A 9'0–9'6 longboard typically weighs 5–9 kg. PU logs sit at 7.5–9 kg, epoxy longboards at 5.5–7.5 kg.
How much does a glider weigh? A traditional 11'0 PU glider usually weighs 10–11 kg. Epoxy gliders can get down to 7–9 kg.
How much does a mid-length weigh? Around 4–5.5 kg at 7'0 in PU, and 3.8–4.5 kg in epoxy.
Is a heavier longboard better for noseriding? Some weight helps a log trim and hold on the nose, but it makes the board harder to carry and paddle. Volume and rocker matter more for noseriding than weight alone.
Does weight matter for beginners? Yes. A lighter board is easier to carry, easier to paddle into waves and easier to handle in the shorebreak.
What's the lightest surfboard? For its size, the lightest boards are carbon and premium epoxy builds like Thunderbolt, Haydenshapes FutureFlex and Firewire. Among the gliders we compared, the lightest 11'0 was the Summer vibes Glider at 7.1 kg, against 10–11 kg for most premium PU gliders.
What's the best value surfboard in Australia? Value is weight, quality and price together. EPS / epoxy boards from Australian direct-to-customer brands like Summer vibes cost roughly half of premium-brand boards ($700–$1,300 vs $1,400–$4,000) and weigh the same or less.
Is there a cheaper alternative to McTavish, Channel Islands or Firewire? Yes. Those brands make beautiful boards, but you don't need to spend $1,500–$4,000 for a light, well-shaped board. Summer vibes boards in the same shapes (glider, noserider, performance log, mid-length egg, fish) cost around $700–$1,300.
Is Summer vibes an Australian brand? Yes. Summer vibes is an Australian-owned small business, designed on the Gold Coast and sold direct, so you're not paying for a big-brand markup.
The bottom line
You don't have to spend $2,000–$4,000 or carry a heavy board to get a great one. Every Summer vibes board is EPS / epoxy, designed on the Gold Coast and sold direct, with no big-brand markup. The numbers are above: compare them yourself.
