Short answer: if you ride a shortboard or fish and turn off the tail, yes. A traction pad gives your back foot grip that never washes off and tells you where your foot is without looking. If you ride a longboard and walk the board, no – wax the whole deck. Most softboards don't need one either; the deck already grips.
Pad or wax? Pick by board
| Board | Tail pad | Wax |
|---|---|---|
| Shortboard | Yes | Front of the deck |
| Fish / twin fin | Yes | Front of the deck |
| Mid length | Optional | Rest of the deck |
| Mini mal / funboard | Usually not | Whole deck |
| Longboard | No | Whole deck |
| Softboard | No | Light coat if it's gone slippery |
| Boogie board | No | No |
Simple rule: a pad is worth it when your back foot stays in one spot. If you walk the board, a pad just gets in the way.
The parts of a pad, in plain English
- Kick – the raised lip at the back. Your heel pushes against it in turns. Medium kick suits most people.
- Arch – the raised bump in the middle. It fills the hollow of your foot so you feel locked in. Flat arch = more freedom to move.
- Pieces – fewer pieces are quicker to fit and can't go on crooked. Three pieces let you space it to suit your tail and your stance.
How to fit a pad so it never lifts
- Strip all the wax from the tail. Comb it off, then citrus wax remover.
- Wipe with isopropyl alcohol, not water. Let it dry fully.
- Warm the board in the sun for a few minutes. Warm, not hot.
- Dry fit first. Sit it in place without peeling anything. The kick should sit right at the tail, and your back foot centred over your back fin.
- Peel and lay it from the back, pressing forward so you don't trap air.
- Press hard everywhere, especially the edges and kick.
- Wait 24 hours before surfing. The step everyone skips, and why pads peel.
My picks

Summer vibes 3-Piece HiLo Combo – Black/Rust ($59.99)
Big block arch and a mega vert ramp kick. The one if you want maximum feedback underfoot when you're driving hard off the tail.

Summer vibes 3-Piece 50/50 Combo – Black/White ($59.99)
Twin block arch and a vert ramp. Freedom to shuffle up the board, with the lock-in there when you need it. The all-rounder of the new range.

Summer vibes Grom 50/50 Combo – Black/Blue ($55.99)
The same 50/50 shape sized for smaller feet, so a grom gets a proper back-foot reference instead of a pad they rattle around on.
Riding a fish or swallow tail and want a flat feel with no arch? Look at the 2-Piece Fish Lite. On a longer board, the 5-Piece Extender gives you coverage further up the deck.
Common mistakes
- Fitting over wax residue. The number one reason pads lift. If you can feel any tack at all, it isn't clean.
- Surfing it the same day. Give it 24 hours.
- Too far forward. Stand on the board on dry land and check where your back foot actually goes.
- Buying the highest kick available. It looks aggressive and feels awkward for most surfers. Medium kick suits nearly everyone.
- Pad on a longboard. You'll trip on it the first time you walk back.
FAQ
Can I put a traction pad on a softboard?
You can, but most softboard decks already grip well. Only worth it if the deck has gone slippery.
Do I still need wax with a pad?
Yes. The pad covers your back foot only. Wax the rest for your front foot and paddling.
How do I get an old pad off?
Warm it with a hairdryer, lift a corner and peel slowly. Clean the glue off with citrus remover, not a scraper.
How many pieces should I get?
Fewer pieces for a quick, foolproof fit. Three pieces if you want to set the spacing to suit your tail and stance.
Will a pad damage my board?
No. Just go slow and warm it up when you take it off.
Does a pad make me surf better?
It makes your back foot land more consistently, and consistency is most of surfing better. It won't give you turns you don't have.
